How Behaviour Analysts Help Manage Distressed Dementia-Related Behaviours
Sep 13, 2024Here at Positive Ageing Consultancy & Training, we are pleased to announce the launch of a new series of dementia training courses aimed at supporting caregivers of individuals living with dementia. The Dementia Sessions series, developed & presented by Dr Emma, has been designed to provide practical advice and effective behavioural techniques to assist in the daily care of those experiencing dementia. The first three courses in the Dementia Sessions series focus on common distressed behaviours experienced during personal care activities: supporting with agitation and aggression, aiding with washing and bathing, and assisting with dressing and grooming.
The first dementia care training course, "Supporting with Agitation & Aggression Behaviours," addresses one of the more difficult aspects of dementia care. It aims to equip caregivers with an understanding of why distressed behaviours may occur in these situations and offers strategies to manage and reduce their frequency. The course focuses on non-confrontational approaches and emphasises the importance of maintaining a calm and safe environment for both the caregiver and the person living with dementia.
The second dementia training course in the series: Supporting with Washing & Bathing provides caregivers with techniques to make bathing a more positive experience. It covers how to approach the subject sensitively, ensuring the person's dignity is preserved and outlines evidence-based strategies to minimise discomfort and anxiety.
The third dementia course, "Supporting with Dressing & Grooming," recognises the importance of personal appearance in maintaining an individual's sense of identity and self-esteem. This course offers guidance on how to support someone living with dementia in choosing their clothes and managing their personal grooming, with an emphasis on promoting independence for as long as possible. Caregivers will learn how to encourage choice and autonomy, while also providing the necessary support to ensure the person feels well-presented.
These initial courses in the Dementia Sessions series will support caregivers through education and practical advice. Positive Ageing Consultancy & Training, with Dr Emma, will expand this series to cover more aspects of dementia care, addressing the wide range of challenges faced by caregivers and those they look after. We believe that by providing caregivers with the right tools and behavioural knowledge, we can improve the quality of care for people living with dementia.
These courses are designed to be accessible to all caregivers, whether professional or family members, who wish to enhance their skills in dementia care. For more information and to register for our courses, please take a look at The Dementia Sessions Series.
Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by dementia.
